I was not there but have this show on video. it's a good show but hard to say it owns up to they hype. watching the vid, phil looks like he wants to be
...
someplace else. jay lane is just way too jumpy and excited, bob still looks like a deer in headlights. the best part is indeed the viola lee, everything else is just a building stone to that peak. good snow, but even the grateful dead on it's worst day was and still is the greatest band in the world.

Subject: what a ride
this was my first further show..i had been listening to the fox run like crazy and wanted to see them. i bought tickets for both nights of asbury park.
...
got into town early checked out the scene not bad..the boardwalk was really the place to be...the security was nonexistent in this place i mean no pat down whatsoever (this would be clutch the following night).
i knew right when they walked on we were gonna have some fun..i was right in front of phil maybe the equivalent of 2nd or 3rd row. the intro jam was killing me with suspense and there it was..PASSENGER..i didnt expect it nor did anyone else i dont think..but phil was freakin raging..anyone else remember him screaming with joy like an animal??? next tune i was so happy for..greatest story ever told...if you hear the nassau version from the 09 tour you would say you never want to hear it again because it straight up sucked..well tonight weir nailed every god damn lyric..it was really well played with a long jam....friend of the devil felt so welcoming. i like the fast paced version like they recorded version, i think GD should have played it like that more..they stopped after 72 i think?....brown eyed women was smokin JK rips the jerry parts.. when they started peggy o i dont know why but i thought for sure they were playing its all over now..could have been the grass..but phil sang the entire thing..pretty damn well too..the ship of fools was cool--affirmed the nautical feel to the venue/town--i liked it fast paced as well..one more saturday night was ROCKIN--chimenti nails it like a champ..during set break i was on the roof of the building getting some fresh air and talking to an older dude and a younger dude and they both commented how they were happy the saturday night was out of the way and about how lame the song was...i dont know what they were thinking because i just listened to this one in person and still couldnt believe how good it was..
on paper the second set looks like a typical late 2000's phil lesh and friends set, exactly. i've seen plenty of those..this immediately confirmed in my mind that phil wrote the setlist that night. the passenger opener (he wrote the music to that song), GSET he absolutely loves to play, the peggyo (he sang it) and the entire second set.. they proved that further was bringing the heat. the playin opener was fun even though weird botched a verse..althea was awesome! whoever commented on tears in the eyes when JK sang the "there are things you can replace" part--i know exactly how you felt man the jam right after was like an amazing wave of energy...new speedway was fun--and who cares if bobby wants to sing it...would you rather JK sang that instead of the beautiful wharf rat he delieverd immediately after..it was moving...golden road kicked ass..the cassidy reminded me of a late 80s version particular 89 but even better, with more layers to the jam to the point of explosion..when viola lee blues started i heard that phil bomb through my speakers and immediatly thought of the previous review that mentions it..hha thanks! i know you rider was very well placed to cap the second set..and gloria was awesome, i dont know why people were walking out. screw them..
overall this show is a 5, and not because i was there. listen to this from start to end and you will agree. further is clearly the best post jerry dead lineup and i am excited for this winter tour, see you all on the east coast

Yes this weekend was as good, and historic, as all who attended have claimed. As you listen to this show on multiple listens you hear the magic and energy.
This ... opener was clearly the most rockin' of the 5 shows. They just raged in Passenger and the GSET is SUPER! The rest of the set is excellent with BE Women being totally rippin with John lighting it up big time.Peggi-O is sweet but John only takes a brief solo.
Ship of Fools is really great, played in a slightly faster tempo which works well, and then they blow the doors open with a OMSN set closer.
Set II starts off with welcomed PITB, Bob muffs the first verse but this one develops nicely and then into Althea. Yes it is a surprising choice but the band and crowd loved it. Speedway is good, the vocals are alittle rough but then they go into Wharf Rat, which is clearly EPIC. John does it a major justice and the band again rages on. To go into the Golden Road was a cool choice and the good vibes continue.
Then you get a majectic and fully explored Cassidy that I loved that night. Then to drop in Viola Blues was just plain sick!!!
The I Know You Rider was great to complete the China Cat from the night before and it starts off alittle slowly but John ERUPTS and this version becomes amazing. Phil is wicked in it too!
Everyone started filing out before the encore, silly them, so I was able to casual walk up to within 15 ft of the center stage and then the band drops the freakin bomb! G-L-O-R-I-A!!!
Easily the best encore of the 5 night tour.
Bobby and the band smoke and it was TONS of fun to dance too.I give the Wharf Rat on a 5 by the way.

First of all, I was somewhere around 13 people back from the stage in front of Phil and there was just super energy from the band from the moment they
...
stepped out of the darkness. When they started passenger I cracked a smile that I hadn't seen in almost 15 years. Unbelievable from start to finish. Every song made me dance a little harder and made the smile on my face creep up my cheeks a little more. Does anyone who wasn't there have any idea how unbelievable the last jam in Viola Lee was? I don't think so. Pure energy, pure insanity. This band topped every GD show I saw in the 90s save 2... 10/1/94 & 3/27/93. You have to go back to '89 to even get in the ballpark with this show. Hate if you like... I cannot.
So I read all the reviews and internet chatter before the show and it really felt like this show was just the perfect response to all the nonsense. If you were there, there's no way you can write this band off. I mean... when JK sang "There are things you can replace, and others you cannot. The time has come to weigh those things, this space is getting hot..." It just summed up everything... I had tears.
The recording is a good audience source and I really enjoyed listening, thanks for putting it up. That said, I'm really looking for some soundboard or matrix sources... to the point where I'd pay Bob Weir for an official copy of the two nights in Asbury Park.

The second set was bristling with energy. They took their time and delivered. All songs in 2nd set were composed in the Dead's first 15 years!!! John
...
needs to sing Jerry tunes, not Bobby and definitely not Phil.

Saturday Night to close the first set; I think that's a MUCH better placement than as an Encore...While I think that the 2nd night was better overall, nothing on that night topped Althea from this night...simply AMAZING!

I was here at this sick show at a cool old style concrete looking venue! The sound was amazing, the crowd was IN to the show, esp second set!!! Anyone
...
notice the half naked lighting guy by the soundboard in the middle of the crowd dancing up a storm and having the time of his life!? AWESOME! I also agree with Jarvis on Golden Road, and a close 2nd to best played since reintroduction was The Dead @ Wilkes-Barre 4-22-09. I rank it as such due to well timed placement, another small intimate venue and Warrens energy!!! Thoughts? No wrong answers even tho some love to hate on others lol....

Great show!!! On the floor Bob's vocals were hard to hear for the first couple songs. The first set was around 40 mins. First set was good but they really
...
stepped it up in the second set. Maybe they sense they were alittle off and regrouped at half time?? Playing was tight in the first set but did not have the magic the 2nd brought... From Althea on my bones did not stop shakin'!!! Can't wait for Feb.!!!
